Men We Admire: Vince Del Monte

If you know my story, you know that a few years ago I found myself suddenly very single, and pretty out of shape. I mean, not disgustingly so, but out of shape. I needed to get back on track, and living in a small town made it difficult to connect with the people who could make that happen. Enter the Internet, with its wealth of resources — some good, some not so good — on all the areas I needed help with, from style to social skills to health and fitness.

And that’s where I met Vince Del Monte. Well, not met per se…more discovered. Vince has a series of videos up on YouTube that really got my attention. After I started getting results from following his video advice, I started grabbing some of his programs and following his blog. It was Vince who really first got me motivated in the direction of self-improvement and life-improvement coaching, and ultimately that lead to the publication of The Man Sphere as you see it today. So I was thrilled to finally catch up with him just before Christmas and get at a bit of his story while tapping his incredible insights into motivation and inspiration for my readers.

How did you get started on your current career/lifestyle path?

As I am sure you know by this point, my nickname was ‘Skinny Vinny’ all through high school and even when I went to university! Never more than 149 pounds even soaking wet!

Being an embarrassingly 149 pounds does have its advantages though. I was successful in endurance sports. I represented Canada in the Triathlon and ran for the University of Western Ontario Varsity Track team and Cross Country team for 4 years; I was even nominated Captain in my final year.

After university, I started my career in the fitness industry and ventured into the fitness industry as a personal trainer. But there was just this one little problem. They say that your body is your best marketing tool. Well if that is true, I was in a lot of trouble.

What happened next?

I began my quest at a local YMCA in Guelph, Ontario that only carried a few benches and free weights. Just the basics. Nothing fancy.

My main goal was hypertrophy i.e an increase in muscle size. I was blessed to meet a provincial level bodybuilder in his 40’s (at my church of all places) and he begin to mentor me and introduce me to a world of bodybuilding that I had never read about in the magazines or websites — it was actually the exact opposite and within 24 short weeks I gained 41 pounds of drug-free muscle. In fact, the only supplements I even used were creatine, protein powder and some fish oils.

My own personal transformation spurred my interest to help others.

HVP_Vince-19How has your work contributed to a) your development as a person and/or b) the lives of others?

Using myself as a guinea pig in my own body transformation, I released No Nonsense Muscle Building in 2006, my natural approach to building muscle for skinny guys just getting started. I wrote the book so that you could avoid all the bad information and mistakes most guys make when the get started. Since 2006, I’ve helped thousands of guys and gals go from skinny to buff, but don’t take my word for it, see for yourself:

If you had one piece of advice for someone just entering your field, what would it be?

Be relentless. Know what you want, find out how to get it, and never stop until you have achieved all that you want and more.

What’s next for you? What’s your next big idea, project etc.?

On December 18th-20th, I along with IFBB Pro Bodybuilder and business partner Ben Pakulski be re-launched THE BEST program for colossal gains in size and strength called “Hypertrophy MAX” – http://www.hypertrophymax.com/

The program is a 12-month transformation plan with the focus on achieving maximum results- skilfully organizing, balancing and progressing all the key factors of hypertrophy into 12 unique hypertrophy models . Each month is a different phase and each month will build upon the previous — this is a curriculum based system.

Also, each month we will be organizing monthly coaching calls and a private membership forum to provide you personalized coaching and mentorship.

With Ben and I as personal coaches for an entire year, we make it IMPOSSIBLE to fail.

HVP_Vince-4Did you have any mentors who helped steer you on this path?

Yes, I met a drug-free provincial level bodybuilder at my church in 2002 and he was ‘The Man’ who busted the industry wide open for me and exposed a lot of the myths I once belived to be true.

What one piece of advice would you give to your own son (hypothetical or otherwise) in the hope of making him a better man?

Your word is your bond. If you say you’re going to do something, do it.

Do you have a personal work philosophy?

G.S.D. Get Shit Done. I believe in action-taking. I don’t have time to read or talk about it, I’m busy learning by doing, not debating.

What do you do for fun?

Wine tasting. My wife and I love wine tasting with our friends.

What motivates or inspires you?

My goals. I set B.H.A.G.s. Big Hairy Audacious Goals and then I chase them down.

What has been your greatest achievement (personally, professionally or both)?

Working for myself at a young age and having created a business that allows me to work anywhere in the world. To me that’s freedom.

What is the one thing you hope to achieve?

Help 1,000,000 skinny guys transform their body by the year 2020. I would love to be a host for a TV show that helps skinny guys build muscle, that would be the ultimate dream.

What is your super power?

I am focused. I refuse to get distracted until I do what I said I was originally going to do.

Who’s your hero?

Mom and Dad – they are by far the two most influential people in my life.

What are you reading (or watching) these days?

Reading lots of Dan Kennedy books for business. Just passed my PICP Level 1 and 2 with Charles Poliquin. Just passed my Precision Nutrition certification with Dr. John Berardi.

If you had it all to do over again, would you change anything?

It sounds cliché, but I wouldn’t change anything. If I did, I might not be where I am right now 🙂
