Canadian actress Trenna Keating stars as Doc Yewll on SyFy and Showcase’s new hit series Defiance airing Monday evenings at 9 PM on SyFy and 10 PM on Showcase.
With dangerous clashes between humans and aliens, military scavengers and other treacherous visitors, Defiance is a refugee camp left after a war between humans and aliens known as Votans.
Trenna’s character Doc Yewll arrived in Defiance following the Pale Wars, intending to stay a week before moving on to dispense medical care in other war-torn areas. Eight years later, Yewll still serves as the town’s doctor. As an Indogene – a technologically advanced Voltan race – she often finds her natural pragmatism perceived as a lack of bedside manner by most humans. However, Yewll’s unflappable brilliance is indisputably one of Defiance’s greatest assets.
Trenna can be recognized from her roles as Sergeant Hannah Corday on Global’s Combat Hospital. She can also be seen on Corner Gas, Little Mosque on the Prairie and RenegadePress.com.
Born and raised in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Trenna Keating likes spending her time off screen outdoors hiking and camping. She also has a passion for writing plays, cooking, playing Scrabble and Settler’s of Catan and of course, dancing in her living room.
Name: Trenna Keating
Education: BFA from the University of Regina, SK
How did you get started on your current career track?
I studied acting in university and spent several years after working in theatre and doing crew work in film. I have also spent several years in the casting room. I was a background casting director, a casting assistant and a casting director. When I moved to Toronto I began working as a reader for auditions. This was my introduction to the Toronto film industry. Most of what I have learned about acting has come from being on the other side of the camera watching actors work.
What gives you the most satisfaction as an artist?
When I get to chomp into a role that I really love or relate to. I’m always grateful to have work but often you are doing things that you are not moved by or passionate about, so when those roles do come along I am reminded how much I love my job and it makes it all worth it.
What motivates or inspires you in your work?
Other actors inspire me all the time; this is why I love being a reader for auditions. I get to be blown away by incredible talent and work across from amazing actors. It makes me feel amazing! Also, music inspires me in my work. When I am working on a new role I like to think about what kind of music this character would listen to. Music has such power to put you in a different head space.
Do you have a personal work philosophy?
Make strong choices and try not to make excuses.
If you weren’t doing this, what could you see yourself doing?
I would have liked to study Criminology to be a profiler. I am fascinated with what makes people tick….but truthfully, I would probably just prefer to play one on television.
What are you working on right now?
I am currently shooting season 2 of Defiance (Syfy). I play the cranky, no nonsense, alien Doc Yewll.
What do you first notice about a guy?
Of course I’m aware if someone is attractive but for me, charisma, a sense of humour and a good laugh are what hook me…..nice shoes help too.
What gets you interested?
Passionate people. They don’t have necessarily share my passions (helps though) but I like men that have it going on and that talk about things that inspire or fuel them.
What keeps you interested?
Kindness keeps me interested, men who are passionate and compassionate.
What’s your number one deal breaker (either on first meeting or in a relationship)?
Drugs. I like to try to take good care of myself and I would just never be able to put up with someone who does drugs. Total deal breaker….and men who drink Super Big Gulps…I hate Super Big Gulps !!
Turn-ons: Flirty Banter
Turn-offs: The hipster moustache
To stay in shape, what’s your basic diet look like?
I try not to eat bread or anything with flour in it and I limit the amount of sugar I eat. But I don’t let it rule my life. If I really want a piece of birthday cake I’m going to have it.
What sort of fitness plan, if any, do you follow?
I work out at the gym. I can’t say I love it but it is important so I get my butt there 3 or 4 times a week usually. The rowing machine is my favourite. I like to dance too, but I mostly do this in my living room. I wanted to be Paula Abdul when I was a kid.
What’s next for you? What’s your next big idea or project?
I like to write and it is my goal to see one of my plays produced so I am hoping that I will be able to devote some time to writing after we finish filming.
Favourite workout tip: If it hurts, stop doing it. And take a good amount of stretching time at the end. I feel like this is my reward at the end of a good workout, I get to lie around on the floor!!! Sweet!!
Favourite recipe: Quinoa pasta with salmon, fresh tomatoes, sautéed onions, capers, sundried tomatoes, goat cheese and fresh basil on top.
iPhone or Android: iPhone
What are you driving: Rentals. I’m a public transit girl. It’s a great place to do character studies.
One thing guys should know when talking to a beautiful woman: Listen to what she has to say.
Absolute WORST experience on set/shoot:
My first job as Background Casting Director. There was one night with like a hundred BG and it was November in cold Saskatchewan. I made every mistake you could possibly make and felt like I was going to have a heart attack if one more person barked at me. But a kind 2nd AD said to me, it only gets better when you stop caring so much. I stopped trying to please everyone after that and just did the best I could do.
One quirky thing about you that never turns up in interviews:
I love to read and I read a lot of really great books but I also sometimes really like to read total garbage, crappy books. Books that I am totally aware that they suck but it is just brainless, feel good, half concentrating reading. A book about a TV show host that gets humiliated on the air and ends up falling in love with her gardener, bring it on!!!
