Women We Love: Rachel Avery

Rachel Avery is a young entrepreneur who discovered her love for fashion at an early age. She learned to sew with her grandmother and aunt, making everything from purses to drawing designs of dance costume. Rachel was always drawn to quality materials with a unique story and the same has applied since opening Kalloné Intimi.

After graduating from The Richard Ivey School of Business at Western University, Rachel was inspired to create Kalloné Intimi as she always had issues finding proper fitting bras and swimwear. With a desire to support women of all body shapes and sizes, the boutique features bra sizes ranging from 28A to 40K and garments from XS to XXL, depending on the brand.

Name: Rachel Avery

RachelAveryPhotoShoot2014-40How did you get started on your current career track?

I come from a family of entrepreneurs so starting my own business was always something I had wanted to do. I started Kalloné because I have always found it difficult to find bras and swimwear that fit me properly. Being 28 inches around for a long time (I have finally grown to a 30!) I couldn’t shop at the mass market lingerie stores where my friends shopped because they didn’t have my size. Instead I would have to go to stores that targeted a much older demographic to find proper fitting garments. I realised that I was not the only one with these issues and that there was a lack of quality stores that focused on fitting a younger demographic.

What gives you the most satisfaction in your job?

I love the feeling I get when a customer leaves feeling more beautiful and confident than they did when they came in! We sell products that aren’t always the most enjoyable to shop for, so when I find something for the customer that works perfectly I get excited for them. I also love when women come in wearing the wrong bra size and allow me to size them because once I put them in the correct size, everything from the clothing they came in wearing looks 100x better!

If you weren’t doing this, what could you see yourself doing?

I would probably be working for a Fortune 500 company or a consulting firm (which is what majority of my classmates are currently doing). But I know that I wouldn’t be truly happy doing anything other than what I’m doing now.

What are you working on right now?

I’m currently working on our plans for 2015 – we have some exciting things planned!

What do you first notice about a guy?

Definitely eyes and smile.

RachelAveryPhotoShoot2014-20What gets you interested?

I love it when I can actually have an intelligent conversation with a guy who is genuinely interested in what I have to say. A sense of humour is also important – it’s super awkward to be laughing and have him sitting there with a blank look on his face.

What keeps you interested?

Keeping things exciting! Surprises, going on impromptu dates, etc. As well as him doing things to show that he cares. One of the best gifts that I ever received from a guy was a cake! We were in university and he spent the day baking me my favourite kind of cake with the help of his roommate (they burnt it the first couple of tries so it literally took all day). It was so thoughtful and it really showed that he listened to me and wanted to show that he cared.

What’s your number one deal breaker (either on first meeting or in a relationship)?

If he is more interested in talking about himself than getting to know me – a first date shouldn’t be treated as a job interview.

KalloneStoreTo stay in shape, what’s your basic diet look like?

It’s kind of a mix of eat whatever I want and trying to eat healthy. I aim get a lot of protein to stay energized throughout the day through shakes and bars and I opt for fruit and veggies as a snack, but I do love my Five Guys cheeseburger every now and then! (It’s all about moderation…)

What sort of fitness plan, if any, do you follow?

I do yoga every morning before beginning my day.

What’s next for you? What’s your next big idea or project?

I am continuing to work on building Kalloné, but also putting some focus on the lines that we have distribution rights for. I am in the process of creating my own swimwear line which I am super excited about! I will have more details on this in the upcoming months.

Favourite recipe: My aunt’s shortbread cookies – the recipe is a secret but they are by far the best cookies I have ever had.

iPhone or Android: iPhone

What are you driving: Subaru Forester (wrapped in Kalloné colours and branding – I’m basically a driving billboard!)

One thing guys should know when talking to a beautiful woman: Look them in the eyes when speaking to them – it shows confidence and that you are genuinely listening to what they are saying.

One quirky thing about you that never turns up in interviews:

I love working with computers – I know a bit of code and enjoy building little programs. So yeah I’m kind of a nerd J I also have a bit of an addiction to jewellery and have recently become a Stella and Dot stylist! http://www.stelladot.com/sites/rachkavery
